Terms of Service and Privacy Policy

A few days ago, with the assistance of our User Services Division, we have completed the new Terms of Service and Privacy Policy.

If you haven't read these, you probably want to. The policies are very similar to those found in the previous Terms of Service document, but are more comprehensive with less specificity, allowing for broader coverage. In other words, our rules have changed and you should really go find out what they say since you're agree to them every time you connect.

Both of these documents are written to cover the IRC network and only cover a limited portion of the web site.

Upcoming Web Site Features

I've decided to go ahead with the additional services integration with the web site. Some of the things I'll be including for end-users are:

  • ChanServ
    • Topic / AppendTopic
    • Modes (including those that affect users)
    • Access / XOP
  • NickServ
    • Set
      • Password
      • Language
      • URL
      • E-Mail
      • ICQ
      • Greet
    • Release
    • Ghost
  • StatServ
    • Monitor / Stop Monitoring (Channel founders only)
  • HostServ / vHostServ
    • Instant virtual host assignment (similar to #vhost functionality)
  • MemoServ
    • Send
    • Read
    • Delete
  • Sinsira-Web-Site
    • Quotation database access similar to that of Karappo
    • Got an idea for this bot? Post it on the suggestions forum!

Since that list is rather lengthy, it will take quite a while for the functionality to be added entirely. Most likely, it will be several weeks before any of it appears on the network; extensive testing is done to ensure secure, bug-free operation of all new features before they are implemented in the live, production servers.

The last top-level bullet, Sinsira-Web-Site, is an experimental bot on the IRC network. It is used as a gateway for passing information between IRC, IRC services, other bots, and the web site. Right now, functionality is very limited: some user activity messages are posted to #general, StatServ's statistics may be used for various kinds of information such as last-connected status of a nick or mask, and very generic help messages on several topics can be found by using hard-coded help commands.

If you've got any ideas for some new features for the bot, post them in the suggestions forum. All of the bot's abilities will be either network-related or web site-related (that's right, no Google, weather, FML, or other external or unnecessary commands). If you have any questions about the bot, please contact me (Kabaka) either via MemoServ, query, or #Help (say my name).

New Web Site Features Now On-Line!

E-mail Print PDF

We have just finished work on several new web site features!

StatServ

The most interesting feature is the live IRC network statistics (hit the link on the left side to see it). The back-end system is the same as what Sinsira had about a year ago: Denora. What it does is keep track of many pieces of information, such as:

  • How many users, channels, operators, and servers we have.
  • Which channels are active.
  • How often and how much users say in monitored channels.
  • How often net splits occur.
  • Much more!

If you have a channel and you want it to be monitored, let Kabaka or another member of staff know and we'll add you immediately!

Being monitored by the statistics bot, StatServ, does not mean that what goes on in your channel will be made public. The actual chat is not shared, just numerical information such as how many lines are said. The topic of the channel will be published regardless of monitored status. Alternatively, if you have a very, very good reason to keep your channel unlisted, we can exclude it from any statistics.

Quotations Database

Any users of #general will be familiar with the quotations database. This database was previously stored at http://quotes.vacantminded.com/ but has been moved to this web site. The integration is so far minimal, but it will eventually be a seamless feature.

Check it out by hitting the "IRC Quotations" button on the left side! You can add your own, too (please do!). If you see one you like, give it a thumbs-up. Kabaka's bot, Karappo, can also interact directly with the system. So if he's in your channel, try saying @help Kabota to see a list of commands to submit and retrieve quotations (try @quote 421).

Polls

That's right, we have polls on this web site. Scroll all the way down to the very bottom to see if we have an active poll and to vote therein. As of writing this post, the poll we have now is whether or not you would like to see a new IRC server feature enabled which will improve channel security, but may seem slightly "spammy" to some users. So please vote!
